Labor Unions are currently governed by Law No. 35 of 1976 (Amended by Law No. 3 of 2012). This Law covers the elections of the Unions’ Boards of Directors. And since such elections have not been held since last year, a new Law No. 18 of 2012 (Official Journal, Issue No. 16 bis (A), April 23rd, 2012) was issued, stating that the current Boards are to continue in operation until their current terms expire or till a new Labor Unions Law is issued, whichever earlier.
This new Law will resolve the outstanding problem of the current Boards, but it is likely to be postponed again as it seems unlikely that a new Labor Union Law is passed prior to the expiry of sixmmonths
