A New Precious Stones Council
On September 23rd, 2008 ,the Minister of Trade and Industry issued Decree Number 780 of 2008, establishing a new Egyptian Advisory Council for Gold, Diamonds and Precious Stones («the Council»). The Council’s mandate is to «develop the manufacturing of gold, precious metals and stones and promote internal trade therein». In particular, the Council will provide advice to the Government regarding the development of this industry and the laws and regulations governing it, coordinate with the Industrial Modernization Center in developing the industry, promote consumer and market awareness, and cooperate with counterpart and international bodies in this field. The Council is composed of leading figures in the manufacturing of jewelry in Egypt is addition to representatives of key Government agencies. The establishment of this Council is a significant and welcome development as a step towards promoting and encouraging the development of an important, yet often ne- glected, sector of manufacturing in Egypt. The Council should encourage some degree of formalization of the industry, thus protecting consumers, while preserving its authentic and artistic traditions. It should also encourage its export potential.
